iMovie alternative for Mac: edit talking heads

ClipsPal is the iMovie alternative for Mac if you record talking-head videos and want the first cut done for you. It removes failed takes, silences and filler, then hands you a timeline. We make ClipsPal, so it comes first here. Four other editors follow.

ClipsPal: the iMovie alternative that makes the first cut

ClipsPal reads the footage first and makes the first cutting pass for you.

  1. Drop in raw footage. Multi-take recordings are fine, retakes and all.
  2. Transcription runs on your Mac. Only the transcript goes to the AI account you already have (Claude Code, Codex or OpenCode) or to a free local model. Your footage never leaves the Mac.
  3. One click makes the cut. Failed takes, silences and filler words are removed, and zoom-ins, subtitles, visuals and sound effects are added.
  4. Open the result in a multi-track timeline. Adjust it by hand, or type a request to Director, the built-in AI editor.
  5. Reuse the video. Finished videos can be turned into shorts and articles.

ClipsPal needs macOS 14 or later on Apple Silicon. It is a Mac app only, with no browser editor, and the download is free. See the ClipsPal homepage for the editor in action.

Other iMovie alternatives

Final Cut Pro is Apple's pro editor for Mac and iPad. It has a Magnetic Timeline, automatic captions made from spoken audio, and Transcript Search for finding spoken phrases. It is sold as a one-time App Store purchase for Mac, or as part of Apple Creator Studio.

DaVinci Resolve combines editing, color, effects and audio in one app, with separate Cut and Edit pages and Fairlight for audio. A free version exists, and Studio costs $295. Fairlight handles up to 2,000 audio tracks at a time.

Descript edits video by editing its transcript, so deleting a word deletes that moment of footage. It removes filler words and retakes, and a timeline is there when you want finer control. It has a free plan.

CapCut is a free editor you can try online or download. It includes automatic subtitles and a large template library, which suits quick social videos.

When to stay with iMovie

iMovie is Apple's own app, with versions for Mac, iPhone and iPad. If you cut simple movies, or start projects on your phone and finish them on your Mac, it already fits. Switch when cutting takes by hand is the part you want to stop doing.
